On April 17, 2013 pitcher Ramon Ortiz visited a Grade 5/6 class at Westmount Junior School for some fun filled activities in the gym. Ortiz led the students through a variety of stretches and warm-up exercises, showing them the type of activity he does before a game. The group then got their heart rates up by playing several rounds dodgeball. The match up was Team Ortiz vs. Team ACE!
On May 2, 2013 catcher JP Arencibia and ACE spent the afternoon learning about Canada's Food Guide with Grade 2 students at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School. Nutritionist Jennifer Sygo lead interactive games which helped the children learn about the 4 food groups, and the importance of a well-rounded diet. Afterwards, the students spent time asking JP questions about how he handles stress, and what his favourite parts of being a baseball player are.
During his visit to the York School on May 21, 2013 outfielder Anthony Gose discussed with children the importance of healthy eating and how it relates to performing your best as an athlete. Nutritionist Jennifer Sygo attended the visit as well, and assisted in explaining to the students the importance of a well-rounded snack. The Grade 4 students had the opportunity to ask Anthony questions about fitness, and what type of activities he does in the off-season to be ready for baseball. There were definitely some big Blue Jays fans in the class, as the entire class were wearing their Blue Jays gear!
What better way for the Blue Jays to encourage kids to get active than with a game of baseball! On May 24, 2013 pitcher Steve Delabar and special guest coach Clayton McCullough, Manager, Vancouver Canadians, visited Blessed John XXIII Elementary School to teach the students the fundamentals of the game of baseball. Steve ran a fielding station where the students learned about proper positioning and the importance of communicating with your teammates. Clayton was able to teach the group about proper hitting technique. The Blue Jays donated baseball equipment to the school so they can continue to practice their skills all year round!
On June 19, 2013 catcher Josh Thole visited James S. Bell Sports and Wellness Academy. Accompanied by nutritionist Jennifer Sygo, Josh was able to teach the Grade 6 students what types of snacks they can eat before they are active, and what they can eat once they are done. Proper nutrition can help an athlete perform their best, and the group was eager to ask Josh what types of food he eats before a baseball game.
