O's upcoming rotation starting to take shape

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles' rotation for the week is slowly starting to take shape, with manager Buck Showalter saying prior to Sunday's game that Chris Tillman will start Wednesday, and he's leaning toward Wei-Yin Chen for Thursday.

The O's optioned Kevin Gausman on Friday for him to finish out his 10-day assignment in the Minors, and he could come up as early as Tuesday. But now that the Orioles have set Wednesday's starter -- and won't use Gausman on short rest Tuesday -- he could wait in the Minors a little longer, especially with the team set to play a man down because of Manny Machado's suspension.

Showalter said his "educated" guess was that the decision on Machado's appeal for his June 8 bat-throwing incident would come shortly and a suspension could kick into effect as early as Monday.

If the O's stay on turn and use Chen on Thursday, they could also get by with their current group of starters and not need Gausman at all, if starter Bud Norris is activated from the disabled list when he's eligible on July 7. Norris is on the DL with a groin injury, and the team will know more about his timetable when he takes a work day early next week.

O's looking to make strong showing at ASG

BALTIMORE -- The All-Star break is just around the corner, and with Monday's pending announcement of the latest American League voting totals, the Orioles are hopeful that they can have a strong presence at this year's Midsummer Classic.

Baltimore has had designated hitter Nelson Cruz and injured catcher Matt Wieters on top for the past several weeks and their spots seem secure. But getting the nod for others will require a late surge. Shortstop J.J. Hardy remained in third place in last week's results, with Manny Machado moving back up to third place at the hot corner ahead of Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria.

Chris Davis -- who led the Majors in All-Star votes last season -- remained in fourth place with center fielder Adam Jones staying in fifth and Nick Markakis up two spots to eighth. Markakis, vying for his first All-Star selection, had 1,170,304 votes, with Jones at 1,490,000, according to the latest tally.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com -- online or on a mobile device -- using the 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot Sponsored by Experian until Thursday, July 3, at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2014 All-Star Game will be played at Target Field on Tuesday, July 15 on FOX.

Worth noting

• Triple-A Norfolk's Alexi Casilla will have surgery to remove a broken hamate bone from his right hand on Tuesday.

• Showalter said Josh Stinson may miss his next start for Norfolk due to a physical issue, but right now it's not considered a DL situation.

• Gausman and Dylan Bundy will have a work day in Aberdeen on Monday. Bundy will make his next scheduled start on Thursday for Class A Frederick.

• Jazz singer Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. performed the National Anthem and God Bless America on Sunday. Murphy was the winner of season six of NBC's "America's Got Talent" in 2011, and he is a native of Logan County, W. Va.
