NEW YORK -- The Orioles saved themselves a potential run in the first inning by winning a challenge that saw a safe call overturned at third base after Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner led off with an extra-base hit.
Gardner laced an offering from starter Chris Tillman into deep right field, and Nick Markakis relayed the ball in to second baseman Jonathan Schoop, who turned and fired to Manny Machado. After Gardner was initially ruled safe on the close play, manager Buck Showalter came out and challenged the call.
The call was overturned following a review time of two minutes, 38 seconds, with Markakis picking up his team-leading fifth outfield assist of the season in the process. Tillman, who has struggled early in the game, was able to throw a scoreless first as a result.
