Orioles activate Roberts, option Valencia

SAN DIEGO -- As expected, the Orioles reinstated second baseman Brian Roberts prior to Tuesday's game against the Padres.

Third baseman Danny Valencia was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to clear a spot on the active roster for Roberts, who was on the paternity list over the weekend. He and his wife Diana had their first child, a son named Jax, on Friday.

"It worked out well," said Roberts of being able to witness the birth. "You never know with our schedule and what goes on. Once we kinda go past that last road trip, I kind of had the feeling that I was in the clear. … I'm really thankful to have been there and support my wife as much as she's been there for me the past couple of years. To be able to be beside her and support her, it was great."

The 35-year-old second baseman is batting .245 with two home runs and 15 RBIs in 30 games.

Valencia has hit .216 with five homers and 10 RBIs in 25 games for the Orioles.

O's to skip Feldman's next scheduled start

SAN DIEGO -- The Orioles will skip the next turn for right-hander Scott Feldman, a move that will keep the rest of the starting rotation more on schedule and give manager Buck Showalter another potential long reliever this week.

The plan is for Feldman, who last started Saturday, to start either Monday or Tuesday in Arizona.

"If you look at some of the different matchups and who's had experience pitching out of the bullpen, Scotty and Miguel [Gonzalez]," Showalter said. "Also keeps us from having to make a pitching change. He gives us the best chance to keep our bullpen and everybody healthy and not get too far away from the baseball."

Bud Norris, who started Tuesday's series opener in San Diego, will be followed by Gonzalez on Wednesday and Chris Tillman on Friday. Wei-Yin Chen and Norris will finish out the weekend set in San Francisco, a move that sets up the team's pitching better the rest of the month and plays the favorable matchups.

"When you kind of look at it for the month, we knew coming into August we were going to have a lot of off-days," Showalter said. "But [we are] trying to slot people, take advantage of what they are capable of doing and where they best fit from history."

Worth noting

• Wilson Betemit (right knee) went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in his first rehab game with the Orioles Gulf Coast League team on Tuesday.

•The 27th annual OriolesREACH Food and Funds Drive to benefit the Maryland Food Bank, held July 26-28 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, generated $34,271 in cash donations and 9,870 pounds of non-perishable food items. The 2013 donations far exceeded last year's totals of 4,000 pounds of food and $20,000.

• Lefty Tsuyoshi Wada struck out seven over five scoreless innings in Triple-A Norfolk's 3-0 win on Tuesday.
