ST. PETERSBURG -- The Orioles' Opening Day lineup was unveiled during Monday's workout, with manager Buck Showalter going with Manny Machado hitting second and giving Steve Pearce -- who won the final roster spot -- the start at designated hitter. Nolan Reimold will start in left field, putting Nate McLouth on the bench as the extra outfielder.
"I like the presentation he gives us initially," Showalter said of Machado, who was promoted from Double-A to the Majors last August. "I think Manny, sometime in his career, you could hit him in a lot of different spots. He's a guy who's running better. They did a lot of work with his form and some stuff with his running. When I first saw him as a young kid, he wasn't running near as good as he's running now. ... He's picked up some foot speed."
Machado is coming off an impressive rookie season in which he hit .262/.294/.445 in 51 games. The 21-year-old, who said he was surprised to learn of where he was hitting, struggled to put the past year into words.
"You really can't," Machado said. "It's just an experience you are going to carry with you the rest of your career, your life. Going from Double-A last year, now I'm hitting second, Opening Day tomorrow. I'm in the big leagues. It's a big step, and I'm looking forward to it."
As expected, Brian Roberts will hit ninth and Nick Markakis will bat leadoff.
