O's shuffle roster after Thome's addition

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles optioned outfielder Xavier Avery and right-handed pitcher Tommy Hunter to Triple-A Norfolk, clearing space for Jim Thome, while also calling up Miguel Gonzalez to add an extra bullpen arm.

Gonzalez played a brief stint with the O's from May 29 to June 9, allowing two earned runs in 7 1/3 innings during two long relief appearances.

Gonzalez had been used as a starter since returning to Norfolk, posting a 2.31 ERA in the six outings since his return. But the Orioles will be using him in the bullpen, after normal long relief options Hunter and Dana Eveland both pitched on Saturday.

Hunter is 3-4 with a 6.11 ERA, after allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings of relief on Saturday against Cleveland.

Avery was optioned back to Norfolk after being recalled on Thursday and making three consecutive starts in left field. Avery recorded a hit in each game, including his first career home run on Friday.

Thome went 0-for-4 in Sunday's game, while Gonzalez allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief.

Showalter leaves door open for Bundy

BALTIMORE -- Manager Buck Showalter left the door open to Dylan Bundy potentially being called up to the Majors if the O's are still in contention late in the season.

"If you do the mathematics of where we're taking his innings compared to last year, it leaves that buffer if we so choose and if he is still worthy," Showalter said. "We can go a lot of different directions with that. So the possibility is in place, but it's something that I think we're a long way from."

Bundy, the No. 4 overall pick and top high school player taken in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, has been limited to five inning starts as the team plans to keep him in the 120-130 inning range for the season.

Bundy started the year with Class A Delmarva and did not allow an earned run in 30 innings. Since being promoted to Class A-Advanced Frederick, Bundy is 4-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 28 2/3 innings.
