Liner off leg sends Bergesen to DL

Left shin injury allows O's to add Ray and Mickolio to roster

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles placed starter Brad Bergesen on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, one day after the rookie right-hander was hit by a line drive in his left shin. Bergesen's X-rays on Thursday were negative, and the Orioles pronounced him day-to-day before ultimately deciding to place him on the shelf.

The Orioles activated reliever Chris Ray from the 15-day DL and recalled right-hander Kam Mickolio from Triple-A Norfolk, filling a slot made vacant by the trade of George Sherrill. Ray, who missed all of last season following Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery on his right arm, has a 9.28 ERA with the Orioles in 2009.

Baltimore may turn to lefty reliever Mark Hendrickson to make a few starts in Bergesen's absence, but another roster move may be required if the rookie is expected to be out for an extended period of time. Bergesen, the Orioles' most consistent starter, has 11 quality starts in his past 12 outings.

Bergesen was in the midst of another impeccable outing Thursday, only to be struck in the shin by the last batter he faced. Billy Butler smashed a ball back through the box and off Bergesen's shin, and the pitcher limped off the field and through the dugout immediately after the Orioles completed the forceout.
