Mora named Player of the Month
By Spencer Fordin / MLB.com
Mora led all Major League players with 32 RBIs in August and posted a .455 on-base percentage and a .765 slugging mark. The right-handed hitter had 13 multi-hit games and 17 extra-base hits, including eight home runs and eight doubles. Mora had five games with at least four RBIs and went 5-for-6 with four extra-base hits against Detroit on Aug. 17.
The veteran hurt himself towards the end of the month, though, and missed most of his team's recent 0-6 road trip. Mora was asked about his status on Tuesday and said that he's still sore and won't be able to play this weekend. When asked how hard it's been for him to watch his teammates struggle without him, he paused briefly before responding.
"It's hard," he said. "You want to be there, no matter what. Good or bad situation, you want to be there to help."
Mora will receive a 52" AQUOS television from Sharp, the presenting sponsor of the AL Player of the Month Award. Mora, who is batting .283 with 23 home runs, 27 doubles, 74 runs scored and 97 RBIs this season, will also receive a specially designed trophy to mark his achievements.
Others nominees receiving votes were Seattle Mariners outfielder Raul Ibañez (.396, 9 2B, 7 HR, 31 RBI); Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia (.374, 10 2B, 6 HR, 20 RBI); Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Peña (.278, 6 2B, 9 HR, 29 RBI); Detroit Tigers infielder Miguel Cabrera (.270, 10 HR, 25 RBI); Texas Rangers outfielder Marlon Byrd (.393, 11 2B, 20 RBI); and Mora's teammate, Orioles designated hitter Aubrey Huff (.345, 11 2B, 8 HR, 26 RBI).
