Orioles purchase Trachsel's contract

Right-hander expected to play veteran role in young rotation

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Orioles purchased Steve Trachsel's contract on Thursday, ensuring a veteran hand in the rotation. Trachsel went 6-8 with a 4.48 ERA in 25 starts for Baltimore last season before a late August trade to the Cubs that netted Scott Moore and Rocky Cherry.

Trachsel is expected to join Jeremy Guthrie, Adam Loewen, Daniel Cabrera and either Brian Burres or Matt Albers on Baltimore's starting staff, and he'll start the season with more career wins (141) and losses (154) than the rest of the starters combined. Last year, Trachsel allowed three earned runs or less 17 times for the Orioles.

Baltimore also optioned Jim Johnson to Triple-A Norfolk and announced that Jon Leicester has accepted an assignment to Norfolk. Leicester had been outrighted off the 40-man roster earlier in the week.
