The Orioles today announced that they have signed free agent CA GREGG ZAUN to a one-year contract for the 2009 season.

Zaun, 37, batted .237 (58-245) with six home runs and 30 RBI in 86 games for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2008 and threw out 23 percent (12-52) of attempted base stealers. Blue Jays pitchers posted a 3.81 ERA with Zaun behind the plate.

Since making his major league debut for the Orioles on June 24, 1995, Zaun has played in 1,114 Major League games between Baltimore (1995-96), Florida (1996-98), Texas (1999), Kansas City (2000-01), Houston (2002-03), Colorado (2003) and Toronto (2004-2008).

After setting a career-high with 61 runs batted in for the Blue Jays in 2005, Zaun hit a career-high 12 home runs for the Jays in 2006.

Zaun was originally selected by the Orioles in the 17th round of the 1989 First Year Player Draft and is the nephew of Orioles broadcaster Rick Dempsey.

To make room for Zaun on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated INF OSCAR SALAZAR for assignment.
