CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced that Single-A Lake County RHP ADAM PLUTKO has been named Indians Minor League Player of the Week for May 5-11. The Indians Player of the Week Award recognizes an individual performance from within the Indians Player Development System and is announced each Tuesday through the end of the Minor League season.
Plutko, 22, struck out a career-high 13 batters across 8.0 shutout innings on Tuesday vs. Bowling Green, limiting the Hot Rods to just 3 hits, while improving to 2-0 on the campaign. Selected by the Indians in the 11th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, Plutko leads the Captains with 35.1 innings, and ranks 2nd in the Midwest League with 49 strikeouts. On the season, opposing Single-A batters are hitting just .221 (29-131), including a .200 (18-90) average by right-handed batters. Tuesday's 8.0-inning, 13-strikeout performance marked Plutko's 3rd scoreless start of the season and his second effort of at least 10 strikeouts.
A native of Pomona, CA, Plutko attended UCLA, where he was a mainstay on pitching staffs that included future top-5 overall draft choices Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer. As a junior, Plutko was named the College World Series MVP after going 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA in 4 postseason starts. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander entered the 2014 season ranked as the 18th-best prospect in the Indians organization by Baseball America.
