Red Sox recall left-hander Drake Britton
Outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. Optioned To Triple-A Pawtucket
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today recalled left-hander Drake Britton from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. was optioned to Pawtucket. Britton will wear No. 66 and will be active for today's 4:05 p.m. ET game in Oakland.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
For Britton, 24, this is his first career major league stint. He has spent the majority of the season with Double-A Portland where he went 7-6 with a 3.51 ERA (38 ER/97.1 IP), 36 walks, and 80 strikeouts in 17 games (16 starts). A 2013 Eastern League All-Star, he held left-handed hitters to a .187 (20-for-107) batting average. Over Britton's last eight starts for Portland, he posted a 4-2 record with a 2.32 ERA (13 ER/50.1 IP). He was promoted to Pawtucket on July 5 and made his Triple-A debut in a start at Lehigh Valley on July 9. Entering the season, Britton was rated the No. 2 left-handed pitcher in the Red Sox minor league system by Baseball America.
Through three separate stints with the Red Sox this year, Bradley, 23, has hit .155 (9-for-58) with three doubles, two home runs, and seven RBI in 23 games. He was recalled this past Tuesday, and started that night against the Seattle Mariners, going 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk at Safeco Field. Bradley will rejoin Pawtucket where he has hit .297 (55-for-185) with 18 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 21 RBI, and has scored 33 runs in 45 games.
