Mickolio placed on DL with inflammation

Rookie reliever done for season with right shoulder pain

09/17/09 8:20 PM ET

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles thinned out their bullpen by one arm on Thursday, when they placed rookie Kam Mickolio on the disabled list with a case of inflammation in his right shoulder. Mickolio, who has just pitched twice since the beginning of September, will relax for the rest of the season and begin a throwing program in December.

"He'll stay with us through the homestand, and then we're going to send him home," said manager Dave Trembley, who then referred further questions to the team's president of baseball operations. "I think Andy MacPhail would be able to explain that clearer to you, but it's because the games count in September just as much as they do in July and August. So if guys are not able to perform or participate, they're going on the DL."

Mickolio, who was acquired as part of a five-player package for Erik Bedard before the 2008 season, worked to a 2.63 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .220 batting average this season. The right-hander began the season at Triple-A Norfolk, where he worked to a 3-3 record and a 3.50 ERA in his first 35 appearances.
