Trembley's job safe through rest of '09

The Orioles will not make a decision on manager Dave Trembley's future with the team until the final week of the season, at the earliest, club president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail told the Baltimore Sun.

Trembley, who took over as O's manager on an interim basis in 2007, has a club option for the 2010 season. He's led Baltimore to a 155-212 record in two-plus seasons, and the club's 8-19 mark since the All-Star break has led to speculation that his job is in jeopardy.

MacPhail, however, said that he will not make a move in the manager's office during the final six weeks of the season.

"I have no intention of making any changes in-season," MacPhail told the Sun. "We'll address the option when the year ends."

"It's like I said months ago -- whatever we decide, it will be toward the end of the year," MacPhail added. "Whether we pick up the option or not, it probably won't be decided until the last weekend of the season. Nothing has really changed on this front."

Although Trembley will not be judged based solely on the O's record, MacPhail said that it is important for the team to finish up strong after struggling down the stretch in recent seasons.

"I don't want to see us have this horrific last six weeks of the season again," MacPhail said. "It's not just the record; it's how we get there. I know that's a tall order because the schedule is tough. I think I saw a graphic that said we have the second-hardest [schedule] remaining. But it's a function of how we're playing and of avoiding the issues that we've had the last couple of years."

Trembley, for his part, said he is focused on helping his young team to continue to grow rather than worrying about his contract situation.

"I am owed nothing and I ask nothing," Trembley said. "I just do the best job that I can all the time out here. And I am confident in my abilities, and I am just working every day to get the guys better, especially the younger players."
