Instant replay at a glance

A monumental change to the rule books of Major League Baseball took effect on Aug. 28, 2008, when instant replay was approved to be used in regular-season play.

Six days later on Sept. 3, replay debuted: With the Yankees holding a ninth-inning lead in Tampa Bay, Alex Rodriguez hit a shot to left field that was called a homer, but then met with opposition by Rays manager Joe Maddon. The umpires conferred, checked the footage and upheld the ruling.

On Sept. 19, replay was again required at Tropicana Field, and this time, it produced the first overturned call on a controversial Carlos Pena drive to right field. Because a spectator reached out to catch the ball, the initial ruling was a ground-rule double due to fan interference. However, Maddon wound up with the call in his favor, as it was determined that Pena's blast had cleared the wall, regardless of the fan's actions.

Altogether, instant replay has been used 123 times since its introduction, with 48 of those instances resulting in overturned calls. Below is a chart that details the times when instant replay was required, the players involved and the final ruling:
