"I never said I wanted to be traded," Tejada said in a talk with CSN reporter Kelli Johnson. "I said I want to see a better team. I don't want to keep losing like we have the past two years."
Tejada asking to leave Baltimore has been the talk of the town since he told an Associated Press reporter Thursday that the best thing for him could be a "change of scenery."
Tejada made some more comments that underscored his strong belief that the Orioles need another pitcher. They've got a number of solid young pitchers like Daniel Cabrera, Erik Bedard, Rodrigo Lopez, Bruce Chen and others, but many believe the team needs another solid veteran arm to anchor the staff.
"I don't want to take anything away from the pitchers we have, but we need more," Tejada said in his conversation with CSN. "We need an ace. I think they've got to make some moves. That's why I'm upset. I hope the fans won't be mad at me. But I think me speaking up might actually help the team get better."
Tejada also stressed that he has no problems with the Orioles or Baltimore. He just wants to play on a better team.
"Look at the division we're in," he said to CSN. "It's not easy to win without pitching. I'm not saying I don't like the team or the city. If they trade me, I don't want people to think I just want to go to a winning team. I just want the organization to do something, go get pitching."
The key thing for Tejada is what the Orioles do from here. Executive vice-president Mike Flanagan reportedly spent much of Saturday speaking with Tejada's representatives and finally spoke with the shortstop later in the evening.
"If they don't [get pitching], they're telling me they don't want to win," Tejada said to CSN.
