Friday was a historic day for the Orioles, who watched as teammate Rafael Palmeiro became the 26th player in Major League history to reach the 3,000-hit milestone and the fourth player to amass 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. More importantly for the season, the Orioles managed a 6-3 win as Palmeiro drove in a run and Sammy Sosa collected three hits.

Now the Orioles will try to win the series behind left-hander Bruce Chen, who tossed seven one-run innings on July 9 against the Boston Red Sox. Chen had been nursing a sprained left toe and was touched for six runs in 1 1/3 innings the previous start against the Yankees. Chen faced the Mariners on May 24 at Camden Yards and allowed two runs in seven innings but received a no-decision in a 3-2 Orioles' win.

The Mariners will counter with left-hander Jamie Moyer, who won 14 straight decisions over the Orioles before losing in August 2003. Moyer is still 15-3 lifetime against his former club. Lefties are especially hitting Moyer this season, compiling a .345 average. He is 5-0 with a 2.75 ERA at Safeco Field compared to 3-3 with a 7.09 ERA on the road.

The Orioles offense was overshadowed by Palmeiro's feat. They banged out 13 hits and they remain second in the American League with a .278 average. Brian Roberts went 1-for-5 and is batting .342, slipping to second in the American League in average behind Boston's Johnny Damon.
