The Orioles' 40-man roster
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles set their 40-man roster Thursday, adding several prospects and claiming another off waivers.
The club claimed first baseman Walter Young off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, adding him to the 40-man roster. Young, who is listed in the Pirates' 2003 media guide at 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 296 pounds, was Pittsburgh's minor league player of the year in 2002.
Young, 23, hit 20 home runs with 87 RBIs for Single-A Lynchburg last season and gives the O's farm system a much-needed power threat.
Also added to the 40-man roster were right-handers Denny Bautista, David Crouthers and Eddy Rodriguez and left-handers Brian Forystek and Ryan Hannaman. Left-hander Erik Bedard (Tommy John surgery), outfielder Marty Cordova (Tommy John surgery) and first baseman David Segui (wrist surgery) were activated from the 60-day disabled list. The Orioles now have 35 players on their 40-man roster.
The Orioles acquired Bautista, 20, and right-hander Don Levinski from the Marlins for Jeff Conine in August. Bautista went a combined 12-9 with a 3.40 ERA between Single-A and Double-A in the Marlins' system. He is expected to be a starter for Double-A Bowie.
Crouthers, 23, a third-round pick in 2001, went 11-7 with a 3.66 ERA for Single-A Frederick. Forystek, 25, a 14th-round pick in 2000, was 9-9 with a 3.39 ERA for Bowie and started 21 of 29 games.
Rodriguez, 22, was 3-4 with a 2.34 ERA and 13 saves for Bowie. He held opponents to a .188 average and tied for the Eastern League lead with 56 appearances. Hannaman was acquired from the Giants in the Sidney Ponson deal. The left-hander was a combined 6-8 with a 4.48 ERA in 22 games with three teams in the Baltimore and San Francisco systems.
