Later that evening, the University of Maryland's men's basketball team wins the NCAA title, capping a memorable day in Charm City.
1998: Trailing the Kansas City Royals 3-0 going to the bottom of the 9th, Harold Baines leads off the final inning with a home run and the Orioles score 3 more runs with 2 outs, capped by Jeffrey Hammonds' 2-run single to left, for a 4-3 win in the season's third game.
1989: The Orioles open the season with a 5-4 win over Boston at Memorial Stadium. Cal Ripken's 3-run homer off Red Sox ace Roger Clemens gives the O's a 6th inning lead, but it is Craig Worthington's single in the 11th that provides the game-winner.
2004: In the first home opener at night in club history, the Orioles surprise a national television audience with a 7-2 win over the Boston Red Sox. Sidney Ponson pitches into the 6th inning, allowing one run, to beat Pedro Martinez. Catcher Javy Lopez homers on the first pitch to him and goes 3-for-4 with 3 RBI in his Orioles debut.
1999: The Orioles win the season opener 10-7 over Tampa Bay before 46,733 fans. The first four hitters in the lineup combined for 9 hits and 9 RBI, & Mussina got the win.
2013: The Orioles win the home opener vs. the Twins, 9-5, before 46,653 fans, scoring five runs in the 8th. Jones' base-loaded single ties the game before Davis belts a grand slam.
1992: Oriole Park at Camden Yards ushers in a new era of "retro ballparks," and the Orioles beat the Indians, 2-0, on Rick Sutcliffe's complete game.

After healing, Ripken says, "It was the closest I've come to not playing."

1993: Oriole Park hosts the city's second All-Star Game and first since 1958. The event follows a week-long "All-Star Fan Fest," the first of its kind.
1996: Mike Devereaux and Luis Polonia hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to break a tie and give the Birds the lead in an 8-6 win over the Red Sox.
1993: Cal Ripken Jr. hits his 278th career home run as a shortstop against the Twins' Scott Erickson at Camden Yards, breaking the record held by Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks. The feat goes unrecognized until after the season, and the Orioles install an orange seat in the left field stands prior to the 1994 season to mark the spot of the home run.
1993: Mike Devereaux goes 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBI to lead the O's to a 9-7 win over the Twins.
1993: Roberto Alomar and Bobby Bonilla hit sacrifice flies in the ninth inning of a come-from-behind 11-10 win over the Blue Jays. It is Davey Johnson his 1,000th professional victory as a manager.
1996: Shortly after the Orioles lose the opener to Texas, 6-4, a freight train derails in a tunnel near Camden Yards, leaking chemicals and causing the second game of a day-night doubleheader as well as games the next two days to be postponed. Play resumes with a day-night doubleheader vs. the Angels on July 21.
2008: In a wild game featuring pair of six-run innings, the O's tie the Tigers in the ninth on Ramon Hernandez's solo homer and win, 11-10, in the 10th when Luke Scott goes deep.
2010: RBI doubles by Felix Pie and Miguel Tejada tie the game in the ninth inning. After both teams score in 12th, Julio Lugo's single in the 13th gives the Orioles an 11-10 win over the Rays.
